Therapeutic Mentoring Services within our
Dispositional Alternatives Program (DAP)

What is DAP?

Dispositional Alternative is a legal term that refers to a judge’s decision to give a youthful offender an alternative to incarceration or out-of-home placement. DAP is a community-based, family-centered program that provides services to youth in Tompkins County, ages 7 to 18, and their families. Through counseling, case management, enrichment activities, family meetings, referrals and follow-up services, DAP fosters positive changes in youth who are having difficulties at home, school, or in the community.

DAP is a contractual program, working closely with the Department of Social Services. DAP caseworkers provide thorough and consistent support for youth and their families for 6-9 months. This allows for the creation of trust and for the development of rapport between the caseworker and youth.

How DAP Works

DAP serves youth ages 7–18 who reside in Tompkins County and are at risk of out of home placement.  At risk behaviors include: truancy, disruptive school behaviors, running away, incorrigibility at home, aggressive outbursts, domestic violence, indicated reports of child abuse or neglect, mental health problems, substance abuse, and criminal offenses.

DAP continues to provide a unique casework model that combines group learning and recreation with individual and family goal planning, advocacy, case management, crisis management, mentoring and parent guidance, and youth development.

Crisis Management
DAP caseworkers are available 24 hours a day through an on-call phone line to assist families and youth in crisis.  Additionally, caseworkers routinely adjust their schedules to meet with families before 9 AM and after 5 PM, recognizing that families often need help outside of business hours.
